Think and Learn – Today’s Quote

He who learns but does not think, is lost!  He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.

A Prepper Halloween Challenge

Today’s one of those days where no one looks too askance at you if you dress up like a zombie, an ax murderer or a Somali pirate.  Why not take advantage of the allowance for weirdness by trying this Prepper Halloween Challenge…

Ask the first five friends and acquaintances you meet what their ‘zombie apocalypse’ plan is.  I’ll bet you get at least four answers that are at least somewhat well (or considering we’re talking fictional monsters…ill) considered.  Enjoy the subsequent conversations as you ask your buddies to expand and elaborate on their plans.  Once the conversation begins to lull try this segue:

“Sounds like you’ve got a good plan for the zombie apocalypse, what about an energy apocalypse like an EMP attack or CME event?” (more…)

Andrew’s Note:  I got a kick out of this and won’t even bother commenting on conclusions like swordplay and turning a school bus into a ‘spiked death machine!’

A Nation Of Whimpering Slaves To Fear – Today’s Quote

We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, fear of getting down-sized or fired because of the plunging economy, fear of getting evicted for bad debts or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a terrorist sympathizer.

Writer & Cold War Airman First Class Hunter S. Thompson

Intentional Living

I recently had a conversation with a Prepography reader about the concept of intentional living.  The concept was new to that particular reader and he encouraged me to introduce it to my other readers with a short article.  I’m certainly not an expert on intentional living and it’s still more a goal than a habit but every month I get a little better at living with intention.  Here’s that brief introduction:

  • Like many workers I can easily find myself a slave to my need to fulfill my financial obligations…
  • Like many business owners I can easily find myself a slave to my business instead of its master…
  • Like many military reservists I find myself spending increasing amounts of off-duty time meeting the certification and training requirements that increase every year…
  • Like many parents I can easily find myself a slave to my children’s needs and whims…
  • Like many husbands…well you get the picture.

Let our advance worrying become advance thinking and planning.

Expect Evil of the Evil – Today’s Quote

There is no safety for honest men, but by believing all possible evil of evil men, and by acting with promptitude, decision, and steadiness on that belief.

Reader Question on Mark I Antidote Kits

Prepography reader Deanna wrote in to ask a question about purchasing a Mark I Antidote Kit for protection from nerve agents:

Deanna’s question was:

Is it possible to purchase a Mark I antidote kit containing both atropine and PAM and if so where would someone find such a thing? After watching the news this morning and hearing about the arrest of 5 men who planned to fly remote control planes over America and dispense sarin and other nerve agents, I think it’s time to look into antidotes.

Grossman on Sheep Wolves and Sheepdogs – Today’s Quote

If you are a warrior who is legally authorized to carry a weapon and you step outside without that weapon, then you become a sheep, pretending that the bad man will not come today. No one can be “on” 24/7 for a lifetime. Everyone needs down time. But if you are authorized to carry a weapon, and you walk outside without it, just take a deep breath, and say this to yourself… “Baa.”

Lieutenant Colonel (RET) Dave Grossman from his essay On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs

Everybody Lives on A Floodplain

Floods are currently hitting parts of central Europe that haven’t been flooded in living memory…and then some.  In fact, the water levels in Passau, Germany have topped the highest recorded flood levels ever recorded there…and that was in 1501.  Just another reminder that you must plan for the unexpected and not put all your eggs in one basket…or preps all in one place.

Now I’m not saying that we’re all going to suffer a flood, but your preps may be vulnerable to fire, earthquake, theft, tornado or any manner of other trouble…just don’t let your trouble become a tragedy by relying on one location, stockpile or cache… spread your preps among several locations, enter into a prepper compact with a like minded family that’s lives a distance from you…or both.  Of course if you read the Bible, the Torah or the Qur’an…everybody lives on a floodplain.
