Run, Hide, Tell

77 Years ago this week the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill delivered a speech to their House of Commons remembered as the ‘We Shall Fight’ speech. You may remember this speech from your history classes but you may not remember that it was in response to the ‘Miracle at Dunkirk.’

In late May and early June 1940 over 300,000 British, French, Belgian and Canadian troops were surrounded by a massive German force in and around the French port of Dunkirk.  They were low on ammunition, almost out of food and the British Navy lacked the sealift capability to rescue even a small percent of the stranded.  The entire British Expeditionary Force was about to be destroyed.  Imagine the bravery of the British Navy and Merchant Mariners risking everything to rescue this force…now think back to your history lessons and you may remember the other force that made the ‘Miracle’  possible…  If you said, everyday Brits, civilians, amateur boaters, or fisherman then you remember your history.  That’s right, British civilians went to sea, into war-ravaged waters in every imaginable type of watercraft and rescued their soldiers and allies.  The greatest defeat in British military history was averted largely through the actions of the last minute civilian volunteers.

In his speech to the House of Commons on that day in June, 1940 Churchill declared:

…we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty’s Government – every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation.

The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be.

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender…

It’s with great sadness  that we realize in 77 short years elements of Her Majesty’s government has a different approach to those who would subjugate our British cousins.  This approach is called Run, Hide, Tell and is counter-terrorism policy at both the local and national levels.

Now don’t get me wrong.  There are times when running, hiding and telling are the appropriate responses to violence but those are not the only appropriate responses.  The British Expeditionary Force ‘ran’ from certain defeat in 1940 so that they could return better prepared to fight and eventually defeat the fascists.  When confronted with those determined to kill or enslave us, we must be willing to fight.  We saw the differences between these two approaches on 9/11/01.  For decades we’d been schooled as a populace to be non-confrontational and wait for negotiation or rescue when confronted by hijackers.  Three planes full of civilians likely followed that advice and stood by while their planes were used as weapons against important financial and military targets…but that fourth plane, Flight 93 held brave souls who were armed with nothing more than the knowledge of what had happened to the other hijacked flights.  These hardy souls didn’t follow their training… they determined that they could no longer Run, Hide, & Tell…they fought back and by fighting back they saved untold numbers of their fellow citizens.

Toward the end of my military career the Department of Defense came out with a policy not much different than Run, Hide & Tell.  The warriors I served with and I resolved never to abandon the option to fight.  One of the few fates that I can conceive of worse than becoming a murder victim…is being an accomplice to your own demise or, through my inactions, allowing others to die.  To paraphrase a great orator:  We shall fight in the streets and alleys, we shall fight in the halls and the work places, we shall fight in the markets and we shall fight in the halls of government when confronted by those determined to suppress us under the odious apparatus of Sharia law or any other form of fascism.

Top 10 Examples: Miseducating Young Adults Into Children

It seems that some of those adults charged with the “higher education” of America’s youth are hell bent on miseducating our children into perpetual toddlerhood.  Not only are our children being taught that feelings are the only barometer of right and wrong but they are also being taught that there is no dishonor in trampling the rights of others.  Additionally, sensitivities in these infantilized adults are intentionally being heightened to such an extent that they would have left our ancestors quivering in puddles of their own urine instead of carving the land of the [formerly] free and the home of the [formerly] brave out of a continent of wilderness.  What follows are the Top 10 Examples of Miseducating Young Adults Into Children from the past few weeks.

  1. MiseducationMelissa Click of the University of Missouri who insisted that she needed “… some muscle over here” to prevent a journalist from reporting on a public demonstration taking place in a public place.
  2. The master of Yale’s Pierson College said his title reminds distressed students of slavery.
  3. Wesleyan University’s student government threatened the budget of the school newspaper over a column critical of campus’ leftists.
  4.  A Washington State University professor indicated that she would lower the grade of any student who described those who immigrate to the U.S. in violation of U.S. immigration law as “illegal immigrants.”
  5. Another Washington State professor’s syllabus for “Introduction to Multicultural Literature” states that white students should demonstrate their “grasp of history and social relations” by “deferring to the experiences of people of color.”
  6. Another Washington State syllabus for “Women & Popular Culture,” threatened failure for those students who use derogatory or oppressive language such as “referring to women/men as females or males.”
  7. The University of Tennessee’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion suggested replacing problematic pronouns such as “he, she, him, & her” with gender-neutral terms such as “ze, hir, xe, xem, or xyr”.
  8. The University of California system’s sensitivity auditors declared the statements “I believe the most qualified person should get the job” and “America is the land of opportunity” as “hostile” and “derogatory.”
  9. The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point’s list of racial microaggressions includes “America is a melting pot” and “There is only one race, the human race.”
  10. Mount Holyoke College canceled its production of “The Vagina Monologues” because it was considered insufficiently inclusive of women without vaginas…meaning men who ‘feel’ like they should be women.

Thanks to George Will for compiling the above list and more in his article, America’s higher education brought low.

Veterans Day Etiquette

Andrew’s Note:  Today we take a step back from discussing preparedness and feature an article on Veterans Day Etiquette that I wrote several years ago.  Republishing this article has become an annual event here at Prepography in order to honor those who understand that selfless service is required to keep our Nation free.  Veteran’s Day freebies from retailers are nice but a heartfelt word of appreciation or recognition from our fellow citizens certainly means more to us.  Happy Veterans Day!

For the first sixteen years of my military career there was little need for a primer on Veterans Day etiquette as there was little public recognition of the day other than a few restaurants that thanked our Nation’s Veterans with a free meal and a Federal holiday.  All that changed in September 2001… since that time there’s been a renewed gratefulness from the U.S. population towards its current and former military service members.  That gratitude has played out in many ways and one of those ways is by a renewed interest in Veterans Day.

Before we explain Veterans Day etiquette, let’s look at the history of Veterans Day

History of Veterans Day

President Eisenhower signing HR7786, changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

Unlike Memorial Day which honors our war dead, Veterans Day is a day set aside to honor our living veterans.  The timing of Veterans Day grew out of Armistice Day from World War I.  Although the peace treaty wasn’t signed until June 28th 1919 the armistice went into effect the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month (1918).  This armistice was the end of the over-optimistically named ‘war to end all wars.’  President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the  first “Veterans Day Proclamation”  in 1954 at the urging of Congress to officially expand the observance of Armistice Day into Veterans Day.  You can read more about the history of Veterans Day at History of Veterans Day – Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs

Gold Star Mothers & Family’s Day

Pursuant to Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23, 1936 which designated the last Sunday of September as Gold Star Mother’s Day. This is a day of remembrance, intended to honor the survivors of service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.  In this year’s proclamation, the president called upon all government officials to display the U.S. flag over government buildings this Sunday, and encouraged all Americans to display the flag and hold ceremonies as a public expression of respect and gratitude for Gold Star Families.

Prepping For Political Risk

This entry is part 1 of 1 in the series Prepping For Political Risk

I’ve said often enough that my close friends are starting to quote me that ‘I refuse to be a refugee.’  That’s easy for me to say as I live far from hurricane and wildfire country, nowhere near a nuclear plant and in a part of the country with a relatively low population density (by coastal standards) but as I read James Wesley Rawles‘ book, The Liberators: A Novel of the Coming Global Collapse a few months ago I began thinking again about prepping for political risk.

In the novel, the fifth book in Rawles’ post-crunch, ‘Patriots‘ world the characters find themselves living in territory that was both formerly part of both the U.S. and Canada but the respective national governments have since fallen.  Each character must make their own decision about how to react to the advance of foreign armies and the creation of a new nation…one with radically different values than many of the residents hold.

While I refuse to be a refugee during tough times, an economic downturn or following a natural disaster…what about political change?  If I find myself living in a secessionist State promoting morally repugnant policies do I flee to parts unknown?  This is the very situation a number of our ancestors found themselves in a century and a half ago as the secessionist movement tore our country apart.  What if the policies and values of the good old U.S.A. become unrecognizable and morally repugnant to you…how does one prepare for that?

I have friends that think our nation is on the road to ruin and have become expatriates and if recent polls are to be believed the majority of our country agrees that we’re on the wrong track so prepping for political risk isn’t just a good idea it’s potentially a matter of life and death?

Ten Ways To Prepare For Political Risk

  1. Relocate to an area less susceptible to political risk:  The preparedness writer FerFal, who writes at Surviving In Argentina, did this when he moved from Argentina to Northern Ireland…think about that for a minute…Northern Ireland is safer than Argentina…I guess centuries of religious strife is safer than what a few years of socialism have done to the once great country of Argentina.  Rawles promotes moving to the inland West of the U.S., what he describes as the American Redoubt, for a number of reasons including the political climate.
  2. Become a dual citizen:  More and more wealthy U.S. citizens are hedging their bets by becoming dual citizens…and not just former U.S. Representative Michelle Bachman who has since given up her Swiss citizenship.  Dual citizenship doesn’t just make it safer to travel in some parts of the world it also gives you another place that you can call home without the threat of deportation.  There are a number of ways to obtain dual citizenship without moving to the other country including reclaiming citizenship for the country of your birth, through marriage, through lineage, and even through investment.
  3. Give up your citizenship:  The number of U.S. citizens surrendering their citizenship is at an all time high…more due to U.S. tax policies than to political risk but it’s becoming more popular and can be quite lucrative like Facebook‘s cofounder of Eduardo Saverin discovered when he resigned his naturalized U.S. citizenship on the eve of cashing out of Facebook’s for their IPO.  Can you imagine anyone giving up their hard won U.S. citizenship for tax savings…it’s happening more and more as the idea of American exceptionalism wanes.
  4. Vote:  Help select officials that support freedom and liberty so as to reduce political risk.  Don’t tolerate the election of those bent on abusing power even at the local level as local successes spur the bastards on to seek larger offices.  Note:  When you do vote, just vote one time (in each and every election) and make sure to doublecheck your voting machine as it’s recently been discovered that some voting machines are actually robotic party operatives.
  5. Donate:  Contribute to politicians that support freedom, liberty and our founding values.  Like it or not… money is the fuel that powers political campaigns and does effect whether the forces of freedom or the forces of tyranny get to make the rules until the next election.
  6. Stand for election:  Stand for election…unless of course you feel that you are better at making decisions for folks than they can make for themselves…then stay home, don’t vote and spend your money buying lots of liquor, Twinkies and Matt Damon movies.
  7. Be a voice of reason:  Call out the statists you encounter day-to-day when they start blabbering Newspeak or saying things like ‘businesses don’t create jobs’.  Learn to do it with confidence and finesse.  I don’t like direct confrontation because it shuts people down instead of opening their minds…try asking questions (the Socratic method) like ‘then who do you think creates jobs…’ and ‘how are jobs created then?’
  8. Write:  One of the ways I support freedom and liberty is by writing about tyranny and freedom issues from time to time.  Write a letter to the editor of your local paper, write a blog, comment on a blog, write a freedom living e-mail and see if you can get it to go viral (hint…kittens and soldier/sailor/airmen/Marine stories are always good viral e-mail topics).
  9. Rules For RadicalsCultivate optimism:  Cultivate optimism in yourself and others.  It’s easy to get discouraged as we see statist and devotees of Saul Alinski elected and running for the nation’s highest office but our founders built a resilient system replete with checks and balances…we just have to refocus our efforts and dismantle as much as the anti-liberty constitutional ‘interpretations’ and dial back as much government over-reach as possible.
  10. Never give up, never surrender:  To steal a catchphrase from the Tim Allen space comedy Galaxy Quest, never give up, never surrender!  The fight is too important to our country, our future and to future generations to roll over and accept tyranny.  For nearly 240 years the United States has served as a beacon of hope to the entire world, a place where a peasant could build a new life for him and maybe end up living like a king.  Freedom is liberating and generates opportunities like no cast system, aristocracy or oligarchy ever could.

The U.S. is still a freedom loving country…even with recent shifts in the political climate but we must maintain our vigilance, promote liberty and bring up future generations to view/fight tyranny as our forefathers and mothers did as part of our own prepping for political risk.

We Will Remember – Today’s Quote

These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.

President George W. Bush

Don’t Just Stand By And Watch – Quote

Do something… Hiding, or sitting back, is not going to accomplish anything. And the gunman would’ve been successful if my friend Spencer had not gotten up. So I just want that lesson to be learned going forward, in times of, like, terror like that, please do something. Don’t just stand by and watch.

For his warrior spirit and frankly for ignoring DOD policies that tell service members to hide and barricade themselves during an active shooter situation, Airman Stone along with National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, their longtime friend Anthony Sadler and British businessman Chris Norman are the latest inductees into Prepography‘s Wall of Honor.
