How to Cross Open Areas During WROL

Today we present our sixth tip in a series taken from the U.S. Army’s FM 21-75, Basic Combat Skills Appendix D, Urban Areas.  This manual is Approved for Public Release and provides a great deal of useful information for the prepper forced to move through urban or built up areas following a breakdown in the rule of law which is sometimes called without rule of law or WROL.  Today’s tip will help you learn how to cross open areas during WROL.  I have edited today’s tip for ease of reading but haven’t changed the information provided (or eliminated annoying redundancies).

How to Cross Open Areas During WROL

Whenever possible, you should avoid kill zones [Andrew’s Note:  a kill zone is an area where the opposition can concentrate fire on you in order to….kill] such as streets, alleys, and parks. They are natural kill zones for enemy machine guns.

When you must cross an open area:

  • Do it quickly
  • Use the shortest route across the area
  • Use smoke to conceal your move
  • and have someone overwatch you.

If you must go from point A to point C, as depicted in the illustration, do not move from point A straight to point C.  This is the longest route across the open area and gives the enemy more time to track and hit you.

Instead of going from point A straight to point C, select a place (point B) to move to, using the shortest route across the open area.  Once on the other side of the open area, move to point C using the techniques already discussed.
