A Battle But Not The War – Firearms Freedom
Yesterday those of us who value the right to self defense and believe that an armed public is the best defense against future tyranny won a battle but not the war for firearms freedom.
Although the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pulled the gun control bill from consideration he’s indicated that the President intends to go around Congress (again) and take executive action to limit firearms freedoms. It must be a terrible burden to bear when you have to resort to executive decree to force regulations on a populace that’s failed to support your schemes willingly.
If you’re a freedom loving citizen then by all means, celebrate this victory…but remember that you’re celebrating the win of a battle, not of a war. The gun grabbers aren’t giving up, just taking time to reconstitute, resupply, and wait for the next crisis they can exploit.
Chamber of Big Brother
When did so many of our fellow citizens start expecting ‘Big Brother’ to make the majority of our decisions for us? I’ve written before about themes from George Orwell’s book 1984 that I see playing out in the world around me. Now… socialism isn’t anything new, and considering it’s complete and total failure whenever it’s been allowed to run its course you’d think that it would be relegated to the history books…but it continues to rear it’s head in some of the most unlikely places. One such place it reared up recently was my local Chamber of Commerce…or maybe we should begin calling it the Chamber of Big Brother.
I live and work in a small town. I didn’t always live here. I grew up in a good size metropolitan area and traveled the world before settling down here to raise my kids. One of the ways I went from being an outsider to becoming a ‘local’ was by getting involved in community groups that I shared values with. One of the first groups I joined after moving to my corner of God’s country was the local Chamber of Commerce.
If you’re not familiar with what a Chamber of Commerce does it’s basically a civic organization that supports the local business community as well as offering networking opportunities among businesspeople, local officials and members of other civic organizations. I’ve made good friends through my Chamber participation, learned which tradesmen can help me with I’m over my head on a project and worked on a number of civic projects that improve my community.
At a recent Chamber of Commerce leadership meeting we were presented with letter from a community member that both amazed and saddened me.

I recently came across Heritage.org’s 2013 Economic Freedom Heat Map. Below is a snapshot but you can click on the map to go to their interactive version and explore the data. Note that this only shows economic freedom and the U.S. falls into the ‘Mostly Free’ category with 76 out of a potential 100 points.

The Prince of Sealand is Dead, Long Live the Prince
Even though I don’t have the financial resources to participate in the micro-nation or sovereignty movements I’ve followed the attempts and developments with interest for several years. This week those movements lost their most successful practitioner and one of the founding fathers monarchs; Prince Roy, born Paddy Roy Bates of The Principality of Sealand. For his love of liberty, contributions to both the sovereignty and micro-nation movements and entrepreneurial spirit we induct Prince Roy into Prepography’s Virtual Wall of Honor. The Prince of Sealand is Dead, Long Live the Prince (Roy’s son, Prince Michael).
We’ve mentioned Sealand briefly before in our article on another budding micro-nation but Sealand is both the most successful and the most micro of micro-nations…the history of Sealand is really Prince Roy’s story as well.
Before founding and becoming the Prince of Sealand on several abandoned World War II anti-aircraft platforms in the North Sea, Prince Roy had already
- Fought in the Spanish Civil War as a volunteer at age 15 in the International Brigade
- Fought his way throughAfrica, theMiddle EastandItalyin World War II
- Survived a plane crash and being taken as a prisoner of war (POW) where he narrowly escaped execution by firing squad
- Been promoted to Major in the British Army as an Infantry Officer
- Numerous war wounds including a grenade explosion
- Established and run several businesses
- Founded a ‘Pirate’ Radio station named Radio Essex to broadcast Rock & Roll music to Great Britain during the years it was banned in the 1960’s
